The Story Behind the Pattern for Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum

Every once in a while, inspiration strikes in a way that feels almost serendipitous, and that’s exactly how our new Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum pattern came to life. This design is more than just a vibrant print and pattern—it’s a celebration of one of my favorite plants and a glimpse into how I see the world through a botanical lens.

A Love Letter to the Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum

Often called Philodendron selloum, this plant holds a special place in my heart. Its dramatic, deeply lobed leaves have an architectural quality that feels both bold and welcoming. Every time I see one, I’m reminded of nature’s incredible ability to create beauty that feels both wild and intentional.

When my team and I set out to create this design, I wanted to capture more than just the plant’s visual beauty. To me, the Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum has a personality—lively, confident, and just a bit playful. The design process became an opportunity to interpret these qualities in a fresh, contemporary way.

Up close with the rare bloom of a Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum. It's a stunning reminder of this plant's bold beauty and tropical charm.

The knotty texture of a mature Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum's "trunk" was a design component we were desperate to capture in our graphic print.

Finding Joy in the Details

The creation of this pattern started with sketches—free-flowing lines inspired by the plant’s intricate leaf structure, its solid textured "trunk" on mature plants, and its unusual flower. From there, we explored colors that felt as vibrant and dynamic as the plant itself. We chose a palette that feels uplifting, with bold contrasts and playful tones designed to spark joy.

Hues of orange and blue feel as bold and playful as flower, leaf, and trunk of this amazing plant.

The result is a pattern that feels both modern and timeless, ready to brighten up your space or wardrobe. Whether it’s featured on a tote bag, a cozy sweatshirt, or a framed print, this design invites a little piece of the jungle into your everyday life.

From Inspiration to Art

This new print joins two others in our collection—Strelitzia nicolai and Philodendron gloriosum—each inspired by plants that have brought me joy in different ways. With these collections, my goal is to reflect the unique "personalities" of these plants while creating designs that feel approachable and fun.

For the Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, it was all about energy and movement. I wanted the pattern to echo the feeling of a breeze through lush foliage—a little reminder to embrace the bold and lively moments in life.

The design comes together on our Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum – Men’s Graphic Tee.
